A ciência e o mundo experimental dependendo dos factos e da realidade, a criatividade artística e estética criando factos e gerando realidade. Este entrosar de natureza essencialmente inventiva, ainda que mais ou menos referencial, sucede às teo-semioses que entendiam o universo com um dado adquirido e (sempre e já) por si explicado. Dois modos de significar a vida que se cruzam lentamente e que espelham o modo como o homem se vai impondo como sujeito criador ao longo da modernidade.

Contudo, as primeiras teorizações da arte e da estética e posteriores aprofundamentos (associados a aspectos como a criação, a inspiração, a imaginação, etc.) mantiveram um vínculo profundo (por vezes invisível) com formas espirituais de significar o mundo. Para C. Baudelaire, a conquista do belo – o primeiro grande elemento da estética – continua a situar-se na linha da ancestral “cultura da promessa” , do mesmo modo que, para W. Kandisky, a consciência da criação artística é uma “operação” associada ao “novo Reino do Espírito” . Este é um tema capital que perseguiremos neste livro, sobretudo na sua primeira parte, e que se desdobrará, depois, à fundação da própria estética no séc. XVIII, às codificações românticas e a várias outras consideradas relevantes (I. Kant, G. Hegel, M. Heidegger, etc.).
